Worms: Armageddon. Supposedly the last of the Worms series, Worms World Party has now been released, bringing the price of Worms down to $20. Is is worth it?
If you are unfamiliar with the Worms series, I'll brief you really quickly. You are a (guess what)...worm! That's right! You are a little nice looking 2-D worm who struts around. But that's not all. You also use one of about 50 weapons, moves, and tools. Your goal: to destroy the other worms before they destroy you. How original! Last team left alive wins. Fun? Oh yeah.
Graphics: Unusual to say the least. 2D, but nice looking. Good detail, doesn't require a cutting edge PC, and above all, fast! While this is a turn based game, and isn't quite edge-of-your-seat action, once you launch that weapon, beware! All you can do is sit and see that Holy Hand Grenade blast a hole through the island, sending your enemies to a watery grave. All in all, very nice. Not in any way cutting-edge, but definely suffices.
Sound: Hilarious. I could stop there, but I have to at least say that there are TONS of hilarious accents your worms can have. Probably over 50. You can import your own too! Also, lots of victory songs, and the option to import is there as well. There is also funky music too, but some of the songs are kinda dumb. All in all, you'll be laughing for a long time until you've heard all the voices, and there's always that import option where you can laugh at your own voice! Excellent sound.
Fun Factor: Where do I start? Well, this game is addictive. Wow. It doesn't look like it, but the strategy elements give it a learning curve that isn't too easy, but the interface is so simple you can be playing this game with all the options in minutes. I don't really know how to explain what makes this game fun, but it is. IT IS! Just take my word for it, and remember that I gave it a 9.5 in this area.
Lasting Appeal: This game is addictive, fun, can be played as multiplayer on one PC, over LAN, and over the internet, as well as has VERY hard missions and TONS of options. The options are practically endless. However, the missions can get annoyingly hard, and unless you beat them you won't unlock all the options and weapons.
One of the most fun and addictive games I've ever played, and is now down to $20. With more options that you could ever grow tired of, level editor, sound editor, single player deathmatch and missions, multiplayer deathmatch over LAN, internet, and on the same PC, tons of hilarious sound bites, cool looking levels, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc... Awesome game. Fun game. Strategy game? Well, in a way, yes! You must contend with wind, walls, and sometimes rising water level! Not just a mindless (well...) sidescroller, you do have to think! Yes, it is worth the $20 (at Best Buy and Chips and Bits). The demo gives you a good taste of this game, so definetly download it. Then consider buying it.
