101 Dalmations
Rated: G

Reviewed by Brian

A good, entertaining acted out remake of the original classic, 101 Dalmations is a good family movie, especially for those with younger kids. With Glenn Close as Cruella DeVil, she does a great job of creating a evil character who isn't too hard to dislike. Her laughs are her trademark.

Review: Since it is likely that you have already seen the original, I won't go very deep into the storyline. Basically, DeVil is a fasion designer who wants Dalmation coats for her latest style. She hires two goofy guys who don't rank too high in the intellect department, to find and keep the 101 Dalmations. The movie is about this quest of theirs to catch the dogs, and the dogs try to evade them. In the end, Cruella ends up covered in molasses and on her way to jail (setting the story up for the sequel, 102 Dalmations).

Objectionable content: Basically that Cruella is a mean person trying to kill some dogs, and the dogs sometimes undergo some peril. Probably the scariest part in the whole movie is the man that Cruella hires to skin the dogs, who has a scar and is a pretty scary looking character. That's pretty much it.

Conclusion: A good family movie, but older teens probably won't care for it. I would probably recommend it for ages 7 through 13.

A Bug's Life
Rated: G

Reviewed by Brian

A Bug's Life is Pixar's second feature film. I'm afraid it doesn't quite live up to the classic, Toy Story. My main problem is the story is a little weak, and it failed to be very funny. The CG animation, as always with Pixar, is amazing, but the actual movie could have been better.

Review: A Bug's Life is about an ant who must go to the city to find help to rid his colony of the mean grasshoppers who force them to gather grain for them. When he does find these bugs, they turn out to be circus bugs and don't know how to fight. I won't tell any more so as not to spoil the movie.

Objectionable content: As always with Pixar films, is extremely minimal. The only thing that could be a tad unsettling to younger kids is the grasshoppers who can be a bit scary. Other than that, there is none.

Conclusion: Overall, I would recommend it for younger kids, but unlike Toy Story 1 and 2, it will likely fail to keep the older viewers entertained for long.

Gladiator
Rated: R

Reviewed by Peter

A great story about the Roman Empire and the wars they go through, Gladiator is one of the better films of 2000.

Review: The story goes something like this: General Maximus (Russell Crowe) is one the best Generals in Rome. After winning
yet another battle against a different country, Maximus would like to get back home and be with his family. But the dying
emperor Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris) wants Maximus to take over as Emperor when he dies. Maximus isn't too thrilled
with that idea and decides to think it over, while he's thinking, however, the Emperor's son Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) quietly murders his father to take over as the new Emperor of Rome, then asks Maximus to support him. Maximus has no
intention whatsoever to join with him (Commodus is a big jerk), so Commodus decides to kill him and his family.
Maximus eventually escapes and runs for it, but his family isn't so lucky. Home gone and family dead, Maximus blacks out from
a bad wound he got from getting away... When Maximus comes to, he finds himself on a slave trading caravan. After being sold
Maximus joins a sort of Gladiator tournament. Posing as a Spaniard Maximus becomes increasingly popular and a real good fighter. Meanwhile, Commodus is still doing what he does best, being a jerk and doing mean things, and is still in control of Rome. Maximus wants to fight him and it's only a matter of time...

Objectionable Content: Uh yeah and tons of it too. Loads of blood and killing. It's too bad really because even without the blood it would have been good. But then again, it wouldn't have been realistic. I've heard many people say there's buckets of blood and gore and it's such a gross movie, but to tell you the truth... I'm sensitive to that kind of stuff and I wasn't bothered by this movie a bit. The worst part is when Maximus gets that wound that he eventually faints from, that's nasty. We see little maggots on it and everything. Anyway, I won't go into any more details about that. Lots of blood, fighting and hatred goin' on, but then again this is an R film folks.

Conclusion: An epic tale of the battles and times of Rome and the hardships of Maximus, what a movie. This was my first and one of the only R rated movies that I care to watch. I highly recommend it to the age group of 15 to 18.

Extras: 2 discs, movie in widescreen format, running audio commentary, 11 deleted scenes with or without commentary, as well as unused shots and leftover sequences, the making of Gladiator, a 50 minute feature on gladiators and their contests, a feature about the musical score for Gladiator, a gladiator journal, original storylines for key sequences and deleted sequences (also has conceptual art), a still gallery of portraits, Rome, Germania, the Collosseum, Zucchabar, and behind the scenes, and theatrical teaser and trailer, cast bios, and production notes.

Gladiator
Rated: R

Reviewed by Brian

My first R rated movie (and only as of this review), Gladiator is one of my favorite movies to date. And it's quite clean in all areas besides violence.

Review: While the storyline is fictional, the emperors and their character traits are historical. In both the movie and in history, Marcus Aurelius was a good emperor who cares about Rome but who had a very cruel son (Commodus). The addition of Maximus is not necessarily historical, though Commodus was assassinated by someone. Also, in history Marcus Aurelius allowed Commodus to be his successor, where in the movie, that was not his intent. For more on the storyline, please see Peter's review above. I thought the storyline was excellent. Extremely gripping and intense. An excellent battle of good vs. evil.

Objectionable Content: This IS an R rated movie! Actually though, it really isn't nearly as bad as I expected. I started watching the movie with expectations of gorey battles with blood everywhere. I was pleasantly surprised. It still had some really nasty parts, but as a whole the gorey parts are very short and the camera quickly moves on. It is definetly too gorey for a PG-13 movie, but it really isn't terrible. As for other objectionable content, profanity is limited to only a few words that are in most PG-13 movies and sex/nudity is practically non-existent. The princess seems to try a couple times to make moves on the married Maximus, but he ignores her and moves on. Commodus also is a bit "too" loving and close to his sister (the princess), but nothing is further hinted or shown. Maximus also prays to Roman gods and frequently talks about how he will go into the after-life and be with his family. If that were true, the movie's ending would be much more triumphant. However, since the only true "afterlife" is heaven through Christ, it kinda leaves Christians a little sad for Maximus after he dies. All in all though, objectionable content is fairly minor for an R rated movie.

Conclusion: This is a great movie, especially for being rated R. My main problem with it is that Maximus doesn't seem to mind killing the other gladiators much. He voices his thoughts that it is a sick and disgusting form of entertainment, but he still does it. Not that he had a choice, but he only spoke out against it once in the whole movie. Also, the whole movie is about his rise to recognition so that he makes it to the Roman Colliseum, where he can kill Commodus, the evil emperor who killed his family. I don't blame him one bit, as I was furious at Commodus after he told Maximus how he killed his family (probably one of the most sad parts in the whole movie), but from a Christian standpoint, it would have been better for Maximus to not take the law into his own hands (although that wouldn't have made a very entertaining movie). My point is that not everything the protagonist does is good and worthy of being a role-model. He is loyal to his family and country however, and he does value life (even though he valued his own life more than the other gladiators he was fighting). All in all, there are some things to be concerned about morally, but all these things are historical. In conclusion though, an excellent movie. Amazing acting (Russel Crowe was awesome!), emotional storyline, awesome CG graphics and scenery, cool battle scenes (even though they can be pretty nasty), and an epic battle of good vs. evil. I loved it. Excellent, very entertaining, and not all that gross. I would recommend this for people who want a serious but awesome movie, and who are above the age of 13. It also has good history, so for Roman history fans this would also be a great look. A definate 5/5 rating.

Extras: DVD - 2 discs, movie in widescreen format, running audio commentary, 11 deleted scenes with or without commentary, as well as unused shots and leftover sequences, the making of Gladiator, a 50 minute feature on gladiators and their contests, a feature about the musical score for Gladiator, a gladiator journal, original storylines for key sequences and deleted sequences (also has conceptual art), a still gallery of portraits, Rome, Germania, the Collosseum, Zucchabar, and behind the scenes, and theatrical teaser and trailer, cast bios, and production notes.

Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark
Rated: PG

Reviewed by Brian

Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark is yet another example of what a great screenwriter George Lucas is, what a great director Speilburg is, and what a great actor Harrison Ford is. Lucas and Ford are a recipe for greatness, as we have seen in the Indiana Jones movies and in the Star Wars trilogy.

Review: The movie takes place around WWII when the Nazis are gathering up all the worlds treasure and artifacts. This time, it's the Ark of the Covenant from the Bible. Indy's job is to recover that from them...and stay alive in the process.

Objectionable content: Amounts to gore. I think this movie could have been rated PG-13 because of it. In the beginning of the movie, Indy's greedy helper tries to take an idol that has been booby trapped, and ends up suffering a gruesome and gorey death. Other scenes include skulls inside a cave filled with snakes (Indy hates snakes) and, probably the nastiest part in the whole movie, at the end when the main bad guys open up the Ark, a white light comes out and their flesh melts away. It looks pretty fake and kinda looks like wax melting, but I know I had a little trouble sleeping that night. Other OC is the main bad guy (who dies a grisly death in the end) is a really bad guy who sends chills down your spine. There is a little suggestive content when Indy's girl friend (not girlfriend) is changing and one of the main bad guys looks at her back when she is in a bra (not anything much). There are lots of scary moments, and some really nasty parts, and I think it could have gotten a PG-13 rating, but it's still a great movie.

Conclusion: I would recommend this to a fan of thrillers, Harrison Ford, or anyone who is interested in ancient artifacts. A great movie starring a great actor and a great storyline written by a great screenwriter and directed by a great director. Not recommended for children under the age of 13.

Left Behind - Prereleased
Rated: PG-13

Reviewed by Brian

Ok, I'm sure you have all heard about the Left Behind books, and chances are many of you have read them. You can tell I love the books from my review of the book. I have been counting the days to this movie's release ever since I heard about it. Well, as you can see from my rating it was great. It wasn't perfect because this movie was made by a Christian movie company that doesn't have all the money that Hollywood does. But for what they have accomplished, this movie gets no less than a 4/5. In fact, this movie isn't even finished! They released it on video now so that the fans of the series can see it. Then, they will perfect the movie and on Feb 2, 2001 will release it in theaters. I will review that version as well when it comes out. If you see this movie, which I highly recommend you do, you might want to go to www.leftbehindfilmproject.com or www.leftbehindthemovie.com to learn about how you and your church can help bring this movie to theaters. Now, on to the review...

Review: Left Behind - The Movie, or just plain Left Behind, as it will be called on Feb 2nd, is the best Christian movie I have ever seen. Absolutely awesome. Even if you haven't read the book, I think you will be able to follow along. Of course, as with all books-made-movie, it doesn't substitute the book, and I urge you to read the whole series, but they have done an admirable job of keeping with the storyline. In fact, I can't think of a single thing they could have done to improve the actual storyline other than make the movie two hours instead of one and a half. As I said above, it isn't perfect. The heliocopters and tanks are quite fake looking, and are supposed to be fixed by Feb 2. A few other fake looking scenes (fake looking 747 cockpit, not very convincing scene of Buck looking into the camera while explosions are happening behind him, etc.) can also be cleaned up by its theatrical release. If they succeed in changing all of these minor problems, they can easily end up with quite possibly the best Christian movie ever, and with Hollywood quality. One thing that needs to be changed as well that doesn't have to do with fakeness, is when pastor Bruce Barnes seems to mix up a Bible verse (instead of book-chapter-verse, he mixes up the chapter and verse). The best part in the whole movie is the UN meeting where you really get a prickle run up your spine. If Cloud Ten Pictures cleans up the minor issues spoke of above, this movie will probably get a 5/5 from me on Feb 2.

Objectionable Content: If you have read the books, you know there will be some stuff that younger viewers might have a problem with. After the rapture, a man is shown being delusional and has blood all over his face. Later, a car blows up with a man in it and a man is found dead on his floor. Near the end, two men are shot a point blank range and killed. Also, one character uses pursuasion capabilities to make people think how he wants them to, and this can be a bit eerie. All in all, a PG movie without question. For kids under 11 or 10 years of age, I would recommend the parents to preview it.

Conclusion: This is a great ministering tool and will likely give many unbeleivers a newfound interest in Christ. I only hope it gets the publicity and widespread availability that it deserves. I recommend that you see it when it comes out in theaters. Especially if you are a fan of the book series. I hope they make enough money off of it to continue to finish the series!

Extras: Both DVD and VHS come with two coupons to see it in theater in Feb for matinee price at any time. DVD has "The Making of Left Behind", an explaination of their unusual release plan, actor and director bios, previews of other movies by Cloud Ten Pictures, two music videos, and more.

The Matrix

Wow. This movie was awesome. I don't know if I can say it's my favorite, due to the content, but it certainly had the coolest effects and scenes I've ever seen!

Review: The Matrix has a very unusual and complex storyline. I don't want to go into it much so I don't give it away if you haven't seen it. It may take more than one viewing to unravel all of the parts of the story, but it is certainly a cool idea! Basically, the movie is about a computer hacker who's screen name is Neo. He is just living his normal life, when he gets plunged headlong into realizing the last thing he ever would have dreamed. Computers are ruling the earth, and humans are being used for batteries! He joins some other people who have come to their senses and who have been freed from the control of the computers. He then helps them fight some very evil and tough bad guys in order to save the human race from being slaves all their lives. Eventually, they win out over these bad guys. There's a lot more to it, so see it for yourself if you think you can handle it. This movie also has the most awesome special effects and scenes I've ever seen (right up there with Star Wars).

Objectionable Content: Another R action movie. Like Patriot and Gladiator, practically the only thing in this movie that makes it R is the violence. There isn't even much gore in this movie. Just constant violence and fighting.

The Maverick
Rated: PG

The Maverick is a hilarious western comedy. Mel Gibson stars as a cool guy who is just plain funny. Practically everything he does makes you laugh.

Review: The movie storyline is basically this: To get to a poker party on a fancy steam boat, Jeff (Mel Gibson) must gather $25 grand. The movie is about him on his way to the party and as he tries to get enough money in time. Along the way he "meets" a guy named Cooper, and a girl who are both on their way to the party. The girl also needs more money, so along the way they both try to get some. Jeff's hilarious personality and his constant antics are just plain hilarious.

Objectionable content: PG is a bit of a mild rating for this movie. While there isn't enough bad stuff to make it a definite PG-13, there is quite a bit of language (d*mns, b*tches, asses, etc.), and one scene with Jeff and the girl in a bedroom kissing passionately (Jeff is seen later without his shirt, but nothing else is seen) and other times there are some suggestive things said. A few people are shot at, but do not seem to be injured very much.

Conclusion: All in all this movie is an absolutely hilarious comedy set in the wild west, but could be a bit more innocent. Because of content, it might get a 3/5, but it's such a great movie I couldn't give it less than a 4/5. It might have gotten a 5/5 if it didn't have so much bad language and a few of the suggestive instances. Kids under the age of 10 probably won't get much out of it, and it's probably not appropriate for them. Ages 11 and up would probably like it, but because of the content I would recommend it for teens and up (who are almost guaranteed to love it).

Extras: The DVD has several language options for captioning, some behind the scenes clips, and both the pan-and-scan and widescreen modes.

The Patriot
Rated: R

Reviewed by Brian

Wow. Another amazing movie. Similar to Gladiator in terms of content, possibly a bit worse, but in my opinion a better movie. While the cinematography isn't nearly as impressive as in Gladiator, there is a better purpose behind the violence. Gladiator's violence was so that Maximus could avenge his family. While Patriot has that motive in it as well, the protagonist is also fighting for his country's freedom. The Patriot is also not as depressing as Gladiator. Ok, to the review...

Review: The Patriot takes place during the Revolutionary War for the independance of the US. It actually starts when South Carolina joins the war. Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson) is against fighting in the war because he is a family man. However, he changes his mind after he sees the cruelty of the enemy, and joins the war. He is appalled by the poor strategy being exhibited by his countrymen, and became their leader, inflicting many casualties upon the enemy. He finally leads his countrymen to a huge victory against the British, and turns the tide of war in the US's favor. There is a one on one battle between Benjamin and the main bad guy, with Benjamin the victor. He gets sliced quite a few time by the bad guy's sword, but the bad guy never has enough strength to kill Benjamin, and Benjamin finally finishes him off in a scene that is pretty nasty, though the nastiness isn't shown. Later, the French come and assist America and the war ends. Benjamin returns to what is left of his family, and lives in a new home built for him by his compatriots.

Objectionable Content: Similar to Gladiator, but probably worse. There are many gorey scenes, but the camera rarely lingers for long. Probably the worst scene is soon after Benjamin loses one of his sons, and begins hacking at an enemy officer who he just killed. This scene goes on for a while, with the camera looking up at Benjamin as blood splatters around. It is understandable that he would be enraged at them for killing his son, but he did not in any way set a good example for his two younger sons who saw him do it (this is mostly the only instance where there is utterly needless violence exhibited by the Americans). This scene is not enjoyable and I don't think it should have been included. Other nasty scenes are ones where people lose their heads from cannon balls, and when legs are being amputated by the medics. Other objectionable content is mostly war scenes, as well as a man commiting suicide (not graphic), many innocent civillian casualties, the bad guy getting his throat slit at the end, etc. Nothing is terribly gorey (worst is probably the amputations and Benjamin's hacking scene), but they are nasty all the same. Also, there are many devastatingly sad parts. Benjamin loses many of his sons in the war, as well as good friends. An entire church full of people is burned to the ground, many of the inhabitants are characters we had begun to know. Those are the worst parts. A couple very minor suggestive instances occur, and one female character wears outfits with quite a bit of cleavage showing. Language is kept to PG severity. All in all, violence and gore are the only major factors to be worried about, as well as the many very sad parts.

Conclusion and Recommendations: In conclusion, I would highly recommend this movie. This is one of my favorite movies as of now, and I liked it better than Gladiator because the main character and most of his family live to the end of the movie, and the main character, while he doesn't seem to be a Christian, does pray to God in several instances (as opposed to Maximus praying to pagan gods). While there are a ton of very sad parts (mentioned in "objectionable content"), it has a triumphant and "Patriot"ic ending. I would not recommend this movie for kids under 14 or 15, as it has some very intense parts and alot of nasty scenes, but older teens will likely love this movie, and it gives some good history of what the early settlers had to go through for the independance that we continue to enjoy today (though I doubt all the British were as cruel as they were in this film, though I'm sure some were). Excellent movie for older teens and adults who aren't bothered too much by the sight of blood.

Note: About Peter's review (below), in the part where Benjamin is sliced at by the bad guy, my defense is that when the bad guy sliced right through people and killed them with it, he was on a horse going fast and had much more power. When he was fighting Benjamin, he was weak from fighting and was on foot. So, while it was kinda unrealistic, it didn't bother me as a flaw. Just my opinion. I do agree with Peter that this movie wasn't nearly as spectacular as Gladiator (Gladiator had awesome scenes with wide shots of lots of things happening, with the ever present something falling from the sky, etc. Patriot certainly isn't amateur, but it doesn't have as many "awesome" scenes.)

The Patriot
Rated: R

The Patriot I was told, was the movie to see in 2000, the "Gladiator Killer" of sorts. Starring Mel Gibson, who just did the hilarious claymation movie: Chicken Run, I figured I needed to watch it since he was so great and brilliant in CR. It seemed like two gore-fest movies shouldn't come out at nearly the same time, plus both movies starred excellent actors (Russell Crowe and Mel Gibson), but they did. Well, as it turns out nobody beat Gladiator last year (especially with the Oscar nominees!), but does The Patriot come close? Read on my friend...

Review: The Patriot takes place during the revolutionary war against the British rule. Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson), who is a former war hero, is very much against the war, he's a family man and has just lost his wife. When his son rebels against his will and joins the american cause, however, he gets involved and finds himself losing a son after being shot for disobeying a British officer. Martin seeks to avenge his son's death and joins up. Known as "The Ghost" to several British army leaders he terrorizes the British and ends up swinging the war from going to the British to becoming more towards the American cause.

Objectionable Content: Ouch, tons and I mean tons worse than Gladiator! Blood and gore fills this entire movie from start to finish. Cannon balls knock off peoples heads and roll knocking off legs. Doctors amputating legs while the people on the operating tables scream in pain. Then there's the scene... Martin is obviously very disturbed and upset and after killing a British solider he continually hacks him with a tomahawk, even after he's dead. Plus, blood sprays up from the body Martin is hacking, it is really very nasty and made me hope the whole movie wasn't all that violent.

Conclusion: I liked this movie. It is not spectacular, but it is pretty good. Some scenes like the "hacking" one I really didn't like. It has a little better story than Gladiator, and it has fairly good acting. But one more beef before I end... how is it that when Martin is struck two to three times in the lower back with a sword, with blood spitting out, he doesn't die? Very unrealistic. As you can probably tell by the rating, this is not the perfect movie. I have quite a few problems with it, but then again I could be just picky. Or not. I do however, recommend this movie. I don't want to turn people off, but just don't think this is the polished Gladiator killer some were hoping it would be. All in all, I don't agree with Brian much at all (which is a change). I think the story in The Patriot is fine, but Gladiator beats it in every other category. Recommended for people 16 and over for tense and sometimes extremely violent scenes.

Toy Story 2

Easily the best G movie I've ever seen. Hilarious, clean fun. This is a rare example of a sequel that is actually better than the original. Pixar is easily the best at CGing graphics company of any of 'em. They are also the cleanest, most family friendly movie company that I can think of besides Big Idea (Veggietales).

Review: It starts out with a hilarious spoof of Star Wars with Buzz on a faraway planet looking for Emperor Zerg. The movie is about Woody getting stolen, and he later finds out that he is a rare, valuable toy based on the once popular childrens show, "Woody's Roundup". The person who stole him is a greedy toy collector who has the entire "Woody's Roundup" TV show collection of memorabilia. More hilarious spoofs follow, one of Jurassic Park and another Star Wars one.

Objectionable content: Practically none, but very small children might be a bit unsettled in a few instances when a toy breaks or when Zurg is shown, but all in all, there is very little to be the least bit worried about.

Conclusion: This is a great movie that is entertaining to smaller kids because of the funny characters, and entertaining to older kids and adults who will recognize the spoofs on other movies. In the end, an excellent movie for all ages. I would recommend it to anyone.

Extras: Both the DVD and VHS versions have some funny outtakes in the end and Pixar's "Luxo Jr." short animation.

U-571
Rated: PG-13

Awesome. This movie really shows what the US and allies went through to protect our freedom. The heroism and bravery is mindboggling to us who never have had to go through that. It makes you wonder if we would be willing to still go through that. Anyway, on to the review...

Review: U-571 is about a group of US submariners who are going out to sea to try to capture a German U-boat, the U-571, during World War II. The reason? To capture a German Enigma machine. Why? The allies need this machine so they can decode German messages and find out much more information. The Enigma machine works by automatically putting letters into code. Another Enigma machine is needed at the other end to translate it. The men on board go through much danger as they face a German destroyer and many depth charges. That is about as much as I can tell you without spoiling the movie. It is suspenseful, sad, chilling, and has a great ending.

Objectionable Content: It certainly isn't a PG movie, but it isn't as bad as most PG-13s. The worst part of it all is bad language. Several uses of the Lord's name in vain, and lots of sh**s. However, they are used in times where you would expect, and are rarely just said for the heck of it. Obviously, there is a lot of violence, especially between a German they rescue from the water and capture. He ends up killing one person. However, gore amounts to facial cuts, and gun shot wounds. The goriest part in the whole movie is probably when they show a man with half of his face covered in blood, but it is from a distance. Suggestive content is kept to a minimum, with only a minor mention of pornographic material when the Americans were trying to get the Germans to let them closer to the sub. Nothing is seen. So, unless you have a big problem with war violence, the worst part is the language, which isn't too hard to look over.

Conclusion: I would recommend this movie to any person interested in WWII, who is a fan of submarines, or who just wants a great, thrilling, suspensful, and engrossing movie. I loved it, and I would recommend it to anyone over the age of 13.

Extras: The DVD version has a great menu with LOTS of extra stuff. There is two interviews with WWII submariners who tell about their experiences, a video about how the Enigma worked, a video on the making of U-571, and an archive WWII clip of actual film from a submarine attack during the war. Other extras include bios of the actors, and what inspired the writer to do the movie.
